Independents include all non-major-party candidates and affiliations

Notes

This scoreboard describes independents and third parties. Voter Registrations combines unaffiliated voters and voters registered with non-major parties, as a share of all registrations in the jurisdictions. Chart filters below do not change this scoreboard. Completed-cycle competitive candidacies require over $100k raised, general-ballot access and over 20% of the general-election vote; their share uses all federal candidacies across all parties meeting those same criteria. Seats use the following February snapshot.

Notes
  • The chart compares even-year federal cycles. Isolated odd-year special-election records are excluded from this view because they do not represent a full cycle and lack matched fundraising here.
  • Received >20% of General Vote requires a recorded general-election vote share strictly above 20%. Missing general results do not qualify through this path. Enable Include Primary Vote >20%? to also admit candidates with a primary share strictly above 20%, even if they never reached the general ballot. The fundraising, party and office filters still apply.
  • Primary results are available for House and Senate races from 2010 onward. The optional primary path uses these results; missing primary data never qualifies a candidate. Presidential primary shares are not available here.
  • Raised > $100k is a strict threshold on cycle-total receipts. A ballot candidate without a matched finance record remains in the table with Raised shown as — and cannot pass that threshold. Registration totals cover only jurisdictions that report party affiliation; states without party registration are not treated as zero.
  • Registration gap: The series begins in 2000. The 2018 and 2020 points are blank because the source has snapshots in August 2017 and June 2021, not in those election years; the chart does not interpolate them.
  • Vote share uses votes assigned to named candidates. Undervotes, overvotes, generic write-in totals, and similar administrative rows are excluded from both numerator and denominator. Selecting every party with all qualification criteria off therefore represents the complete candidate vote.
  • Candidate rows show recorded party names; presidential rows can list multiple state ballot affiliations. Unrecognized source codes are preserved. An unclassified affiliation appears only when every party box is selected; it is not silently treated as 3rd party. When an unknown finance affiliation has an identity-matched ballot result, that verified result supplies the party.

Receipts are cycle totals. Fundraising share compares qualifying candidates with all recorded receipts in the selected offices, including deselected parties and unclassified affiliations. Missing receipts are not included in that recorded total. Registration figures are the sum of jurisdictions; states that do not register party affiliation are absent. Missing general-election results do not satisfy the general-vote threshold; the optional primary path can qualify a candidate separately.
